Auto 66 Cadwell 2018

Auto 66 Club Festival of Wheels

The Auto 66 Club Festival of Wheels held at Cadwell Park is a little different to most race events as it features bikes, sidecars, superkarts and cars all in one event.
Auto 66 Club is based in Scarborough and used to hold a lot of its events at Oliver's Mount. However, with the safety restrictions that the local council have put on racing at Oliver's Mount I expect them to come to Cadwell more often.
So the meeting catered for all petrol heads in one neat racing package, including the fans of two stroke fumes billowing from the karts.
The event is held over two days I went on the Saturday and the Sunday. Saturday being mainly practice, and as it was the day England (it could well be coming home) played Sweden, it wasn’t packed with people.
The bright sunny weather we have been having over the last few weeks in the UK has been amazing. However, this doesn't make it great for taking automotive photography unless you are shooting in the golden hours.
Bright sunshine equals high contrast pictures with blown highlights and deep shadows so getting your exposure right is very important. Meter off the track and check your results. I take a few shots on the warm up lap then adjust my settings as required.
Shooting into the sun can give pleasing results in the right environment but when you are trying to capture fast moving subjects it's not great.
To get great photos in direct sunlight is challenging. You can't move the subject on a race track but you do have legs (I hope), so get the sun on your back. Ensure if you have a lens hood that it is fitted.
A circular polarizing filter or neutral density filter will reduce the amount of light coming into the camera; experiment with these before coming to the track.
My recommendation for shooting in bright sunlight is look at the subject. Don’t just start shooting as the vehicles come past. Take a lap to two to see where the light is best.
Mark Goodings riding the Kawasaki ZX10R to second place in the Senior race with a best lap of 1:33.900.
At some point the light will be reflected onto your lens in just the right way to make the colours pop on your subject. If you are not seeing it, move and change your angle to the subject remembering you can get higher and lower. If you are still not seeing it, golf might be the hobby for you.
Joking aside you will know when it's right but sometimes you can't move. if you are in a grandstand, suck it up using the hand that has been dealt you is all you can do. Fiddle with the curves settings in photoshop when you get home to reduce the contrast.
Hall Bends is where I hang out when the light is bright as the trees will help diffuse the light and you get a natural vignette from the dark backgrounds and foliage. The Cadwell circuit guide is here, this will help you pick the right spot.

The Auto 66 Club Festival of Wheels is an enjoyable event with something for everyone. Combine this with the attractive surroundings of Cadwell and you will pick up some great photos.
I hope you have enjoyed this write up and photographs of the Auto 66 Club Festival of Wheels held at Cadwell Park.

As always, I don’t claim to be an expert on this subject, it's just my observations of a day out with some friends carrying a camera and hopefully I will inspire some of you to get out there and take some great images.
