750 Motor Club at Cadwell Park 

What a difference a day makes. From blazing sunshine on Friday at Snetterton to a cold blustery rain soaked weekend at Cadwell. The conditions for the 750 Motor Club event proved challenging for the racers as the track conditions changed dramatically over the weekend and even during the races.

The 750 Motor Club was formed in 1939 to promote the use of the Austin Seven in road and trials events. The Sevens are still raced today by the club, it being the longest running championship in the world - older than F1!
The 750 Motor Club prides itself on producing affordable motorsport by the way of fair rules that keep the racers on a level playing field. 
Joining the club and throwing loads of money at a vehicle will not pay dividends here as the classes are strictly controlled to prevent that happening. 
I got the impression from the Gentlemen racers that most of them were happy just to get the cars round the track without too much risk to life or limb while having a jolly good time. 
There is always the exception to the rule and Christian Pedersen was on it in his Austin 7 being 8 seconds ahead of the chasing pack lead by Simon Boulter in his Time 3B.
The classic race cars were not the only vehicles on show. There was an eclectic mix of more modern automotive metal hurtling round the mini green hell.  
Mazda MX-5, Clios and MR2 were being driven hard in the wet conditions the racers throwing caution to the wind in pursuit of that podium finish.
The Demon Tweeks Yokohama Stock Hatch and Classic Stock Hatch championships or the McD Cup, if you prefer, saw these 80s classics doing battle once again. More commonly seen in the carparks of a famous burger chain a few years ago, the Saxo, XR2i, 205 GTI and Novas put on a good show despite the weather conditions.
Anthony Reid who successfully competed at Le Mans and the British Touring Car Series was racing the Spire Team GT3-S in the Endurance Financial RGB Sports 1000 Championship. These light weight machines powered by high powered standard motorcycle engines sounded great and proved to be a little frisky in the wet.
The Mazda MX-5 needs no introduction. The staple for track days and transporting curling tongs this classic soft top offers cheap and cheerful racing. Competing for the MX-5 Cup saw Paul Maguire win one race and two podiums on Sunday with a best wet lap of 2:06.84 being only a few second off his dryish lap times. 
The paddock for this event, like many at Cadwell was open, allowing the spectators to mingle with the racers and pit crews. Mike who was racing a Jeffrey Mk1 in the Historic 750 Formula was happy to chat and explain the Club rules and the costs involved. 
Running a car for a session at the 750 Club events are not as high as you would think. A track day costs about £150. Do two of those and that is the ball park cost for entering a weekend of racing with the 750 Club.
These historic racers have an iconic shape and are what you would expect a small school boy to draw if you asked him.
Most kids today won't have seen one of these race cars up close but the silhouette is timeless. A wheel on each corner, single seat and a long bonnet has been the recipe for race cars since Mr Benz said "right, how do we make das auto faster". 
The 750 Club events offer a no nonsense weekend of racing with great subjects for the photographer to capture and close gritty racing.
All of the photographs taken in this article were with a Nikon D5300 and D7200 DSLR with lenses ranging from 17-50mm f2.8 to 80-200mm F2.8. But in short, if you have a lens up to 200mm focal length you will be able to capture some nice images. Keep the shutter speeds low, no faster than 320 of a second. If the weather is not at it's best get down to Hall bends, remembering to increase your ISO as it can get a little dark under the trees.
