NLR Endurance Cad

No Limits Racing

Cadwell Park

We went along to photograph the No Limits Racing who were returning to Cadwell Park for their second visit this year. NLR always generate a packed racing card which means for the spectator photographer lots of exciting racing and lots of on track subject matter.
Endurance racing
The Classes competing over the weekend were the Metzeler Newcomers 600, Metzeler Newcomers 1000, No Limits Ducati Challenge, No Limits SuperTwins, No Limits Standard Twins, No Limits CB500 and the No Limits 765RS Cup Standard.
Endurance racing
It continues with the No Limits 765RS Cup Sport, No Limits Cup 600, Pirelli Super Series 600, Pirelli Super Series 1000, Racebuykz.com Cup 1000and the No Limits Pre-Injection Cup 600.

Taking the mountain on and winning the Lind Triumph London Cup is Gary Johnson, I did say it was a packed event.
Endurance racing
During April this year we came along to watch the Endurance racing which is also part of the race card, so it seemed logical to follow up that report with another. As a spectator photographer it’s a good idea to go out on location with a plan so we picked the Endurance racing, however we also shot some of the other races.
Endurance racing
As you can see, there were a lot of them over the weekend and too many to cover in one report so the plan was to concentrate on the 3 hour endurance race. I would be using a 10 year old camera the Nikon D3X for this event. It worked well even though the weather was not good with overcast skies and poor light resulting in me pushing the ISO up to 500 for the final pictures.

Just turning up at a motorsport event and snapping has its virtues but can lead to lots of pictures that don't mean much. I get that for a lot of people, including me, the photography is secondary to watching the racing. Yes, you will get some nice pictures for your portfolio but for me photography is also about recording an event for me to look back on and telling a story.
endurance racing
The last time we saw the Endurance Race there were 36 teams taking part. This time there were 28. The lower numbers were probably due to other events taking place over the same weekend, mainly the Ulster Grand Prix. This didn’t distract from the racing as there were some very good teams out on track.
endurance racing
Motorcycle Endurance Racing similar to the same type of racing for cars with one main difference. For car racing its easy to set up a car for a number of drivers but not so for motorcycles. Therefore the teams are allowed a maximum of four riders and four bikes for the three hour race.
endurance racing
You are allowed to enter a team of riders with just one machine which is called Solo, but most of the teams had multiple bikes know as TAG. This has its advantages if the rider has an incident as long as he can get back to the pits on his bike or with the transponder, the team can continue racing.

RTS racing will be entering their great looking Aprilia RSV4 as a solo in the next endurance event at Donnington which will be a 6 hour session. RTS racing had a few electrical problems at Cadwell and a steering damper that snapped off, lets hope it stays on next time out!

Having multiple motorcycles is good for keeping the teams going but can be confusing for the spectator. If, like me, you spot your target on track by the livery it can get quite complicated when the red machine in the lead suddenly turns into the blue machine.
endurance racing
It can take a few laps to spot the leaders after a change, the numbers are the same on the endurance team machines but the livery will be different. Also, after the first few laps there will be no gap between the leaders and the rest of the pack as they all get mixed in together.
Fast Bike magazine
There are two different classes running together competing for different honours. 400-749cc machines for Novice, Intermediate Novice and Clubman riders. The second class is 750-1300cc open to Intermediate Novice & Clubman license holders only. So the performance differences can be quite large resulting in a lot of over taking.
endurance racing
After the qualifying sessions it was Fast Bike magazine on 171 that had pole position for the race followed by Cunnington Racing on number 33 and ADSS Kawasaki, 97.

The start of the race is a Le Mans style start. After a warm up lap the machines are parked against the pit wall held by one of the other team riders. As the Union Flag is dropped the riders sprint across the track and start racing.

The ADSS Kawasaki team were the quickest off the mark taking the lead as Fast Bike magazine and Cunnington Racing jostled for second. The ADSS teams lead was short lived as Fast Bike magazine came through and lead for most of the three hour race.

However, it was David Hall and Liam Murtagh of Cunnington Racing that had an ace up their sleeves and came through right at the end of the race to take the win.

David, seen here in an earlier race, putting it all on the deck through Hall Bends is no stranger to winning an Endurance race at Cadwell. He was in the winning team last time out which we covered in our previous repot.

That concludes our report from the No Limits Racing from Cadwell park. FYI all of the images were taken with a Nikon 3DX and the lenses were the 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D and the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR superzoom.
