GTRDC Kendrew 2018

Kendrew Barracks photographic guide.

GTR Drivers Club Day on the runway.

Kendrew Barracks, or RAF Cottesmore as it used to be called, is located just off the A1 in Leicestershire UK LE15 7NA. The base is still in use by the Army but the Royal Air Force has not used the airfield for some time.
The disused airfield now makes an ideal track for the novice track day racer as there are no barriers and loads of flat grass for when it goes wrong.
All of that grass is great for the guys on track but not so good for the photographer. All motorsport is dangerous and it can quickly go wrong, with devastating results.
If you are in a metal box you have a degree of protection, as a photographer you want to be behind something solid. Your fluorescent jacket gives you no protection at all.
Trying to find anything to hide behind at Kendrew was like trying to find a bloke without tattoos on Skegness sea front - impossible.
The photographic opportunities were limited by myself on safety grounds to just the handling course. Standing on the side of a runway with no protection and cars coming at you at 180mph is not a good idea at any time.
Generally speaking, the inside of the corner is the best place to be if you have limited protection. With the sun at my back, a few concrete bollards in front of me and a decent background there was about 200m where the light was hitting the cars just right.
The subject matter was quite interesting as there were a few high end Audi, Ferrari and Tesla mixed in with the Skylines and GTRs.
I managed to grab something from what I thought was going to be a challenging day.
The inaugural GTR Drivers Club Day on the runway was a well run event that the drivers wholeheartedly said they enjoyed. So if you have a GTR or Skyline look them up here. They are a friendly bunch who do a lot of track and static events.
The day had three events - top speed runs down the runway, a handling course and a 30-130 acceleration test with Racelogic VBOX installations. These clever box of tricks track your car using the Doppler effect from GPS signals to a high degree of accuracy.
Access to the site is only via the track day organizers as security clearances need to be completed before you arrive; after all it is an active military base. So you won't be able to just turn up and shoot at these events.
This was my first visit to Kendrew to capture some track action. Overall I wouldn’t recommend this type of event for the photographer unless you are supporting a paid or club event. As a competitor however, it looked great with a variety of fun events to take part in.
