Photographing the Three Sisters Novice Drift Day

Photographing the Three Sisters Novice Drift Day

Report and Images by Leon Wall

9th October 2020

Last Friday I had a drive down to Three Sisters to see if I could catch some action shots of the novice drift drivers doing their stuff on the tight twisty track that is Three Sisters.

While I was there I got chatting to Will Warren who owns this lovely E46 BMW that is powered by the legendary Lexus 1UZ V8 engine, producing around 300BHP.

Will wants to get the power figure to 500BHP which will take a bit more work. He has been drifting for around 2 years and feels it’s time for a bit more / lot more power!

Will, who in his younger years competed in Mountain Bike Racing, is obviously no stranger to dangerous sports and got into drifting after he helped build Huw Gwion Savill’s Toyota Corolla AE86.

He was then offered a ride in Huw’s Car at Drift Matsuri, and that is when he knew that he wanted to learn to drift and to compete in RDC series 2020, until Covid sadly put a stop to most competitive Motorsport events.  He did manage to compete last Saturday but unfortunately, a broken clutch put a stop to his fun.

As you can see from the first photo, both Will and the BMW are well on the way to becoming a success at drifting. The angle on those front wheels is crazy!

The conditions at Three sisters were “challenging”. I arrived at around 9.30,  and the track was wet but drying quickly in places. I can imagine trying to control the car was quite a task! Later in the day there was some heavy rain and even a hailstorm that lasted for 10 minutes or so. As you can see from these next images it made things more interesting.

And guess which photographer parked his car right in the path of all that mud and gravel??   My little Civic was covered. Just part of the fun really, I had a great day and met some great people.
