Arriving at the Birmingham NEC for my first visit to Autosport International I was exciting and anticipating a great day out with my camera gear. My visits to the NEC before now have been for The Photography Show and Heavy Metal Concerts!

As you can expect, it was quite a different crowd! Loads of fans in F1, BTCC and WRC merchandise were bustling around the hallways waiting for the doors to open and the awesomeness inside to be revealed.

At 9 o’clock everyone’s anticipation was buzzing as we were allowed entry into the multiple halls full of everything Motorsport and automotive performance has to offer the discerning racer, manager, mechanic and fan.
Traders selling their high performance wares at every turn. There was even a good selection of non motorsport yet interesting trade stands.

My first stop was to the BTCC stand where I had a nice chat with Cataclean Mercedes driver, Dan Rowbottom. I saw the all new livery of the Laser Tools Racing Infiniti that will be home to Ash Sutton and Aiden Moffat for the 2020 BTCC season. I also revisited the Power Maxed Racing Vauxhall Astra of Jason Plato, looking considerably cleaner than the last time I saw it. Both cars looked stunning under the bright lights of the arena.

I was also happy to see Tom Ingram’s Speedworks Toyota and 2019 Champion, Colin Turkington’s West Surry Racing BMW at the Motul and K&N stands respectively. A quick hello and handshake with Dan Cammish, Tom Oliphant, Bobby Thompson and Josh Cook and it was time to take in more of the show.
After getting acquainted with all things BTCC it was off to the Live Action Arena where a multitude of different two and four wheeled performances wow’d the crowds with their high octane stunts and skills including Terry Grant’s stunt show and Baggsy in his Monster Energy sponsored, fire breathing Nissan GT-R!

The Grand Finale being a truck jump over about £3,000,000 worth of racing cars and supercars!
Leaving the Live Action Arena with the sweet aroma of tyre smoke and high octane fuel, it was time to check out the F1 Feature area.

I was quite shocked to see how many of the F1 cars from 2019 were in attendance. I believe there were the cars of 6 times World Champion Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen, Lance Stroll and George Russell.

It’s fair to say that this was a big draw to the crowd and it was a challenge even to get a clear shot of the cars
Onto the Rally Feature area there were some stunning pieces of machinery on show. A classic Audi Quattro and a 555 liveried Subaru Impreza all the way through to brand new WRC cars for the 2020 season.

I was happy to see the Dirtfish Ford Fiesta again that I saw tearing round the track at Castle Combe Rally Day.
In the Tuning and Performance hall were a plethora of exotics and highly modified motors. One of the favourites was definitely the Lamborghini Aventador of Yianni Charalambous of Yiannimize.
Some of the most amazing historic cars were on display too. Maserati, Jaguar and Porsche were all representing along with one that I couldn’t help but take photos of (being an Olympus shooter), the Olympus and John Player Special livery Lotus Type 79.
Overall a great show for Motorsport fans and even more so for those who partake in motorsports who were there to check out all the kit on offer. I’ll definitely be back next year to discuss photography services with interested companies, teams and drivers.
